Gunnel Nyman
Within the span of a very short career, Gunnel Nyman (1909-1948) defined the essence of the Scandinavian aesthetic for glass. Her influence on the Finnish and Swedish designers who followed was considerable. Nyman's work displayed a wonderful simplicity and elegance; a timeless quality.
While still a student at the Central School of Industrial Design in Helsinki in the early 1930's, Gunnel Nyman began designing glass for Riihimaki. She continued as a designer for Riihimaki until 1948. Nyman also began designing for Nuutajarvi Notsjo and Iittala, starting in 1946. Her most famous designs were created for these two companies with only two years of her life remaining.
Gunnel Nyman was awarded a posthumous, gold medal at the 1951 Milan Triennale. Her most famous designs included the "Bridal Veil" , "Serpentine", "Chiffon", and "String of Pearls" vases.
