Gunnar Nylund

Gunnar Nylund (1904-1989) worked as a ceramics designer in both Denmark and Sweden, but he is best known for his efforts at the Swedish firm of Rorstrand. He trained as an architect in Copenhagen, and then joined Bing & Grondahl in their design studio. After five years at Bing & Grondahl, he partnered with Nathalie Krebs to form the small studio pottery of Saxbo (1929). The following year Nylund received an offer to join Rorstrand, where he remained until 1958. In 1959 Nylund accepted the position of artistic director at the Danish firm of Nymolle. In 1963 he left Nymolle and worked as a design consultant to Rorstrand and Stromberg; eventually forming his own studio, Designia.

Gunnar Nylund is best known for his classical, Asian-inspired ceramic designs. The shapes are elegant and simple. The glazes are rich and understated.
