Wilhelm Kage
Wilhelm Kage (1889-1960) was certainly the most innovative of Sweden's ceramics designers. His Farsta pieces are among the finest art pottery produced in the 20th century. He also was the creator of the Argenta and Surrea series of stoneware. As well, Kage designed a great variety of tableware.
Kage joined Gustavsberg in 1917. He had trained as a painter before joining Gustavsberg. He worked as art director until 1949, forming the important Gustavsberg Studio in 1942. He was instrumental in bringing Berndt Friberg and Stig Lindberg to Gustavsberg.
Kage began working on his innovative Farsta ceramics in the early 1920's. The Farsta pieces were continued well beyond his retirement as artistic director. The Farsta items are individually unique; each is a hand-sculpted, work of art. The Argenta pieces of silver-inlaid stoneware began in 1930 and continued into the 1950's.
