Carl-Harry Stalhane

Carl-Harry Stalhane (1920-1990) joined Rorstrand as a decorator in 1939. He was soon promoted to artistic director and chief designer for the firm. Stalhane had previously trained in Stockholm and Paris as a painter and sculptor. He is primarily noted for his Asian-inspired designs and glazes executed under his direction by various assistants. These studio art pieces brought him considerable acclaim, including a gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1954. He also designed many lines of dinnerware and decorative items for Rorstrand during the 1940's and 1950's.

During the 1960's Stalhane began to move away from the monochromatic, matte vessels of slender form. Instead, he began designing heavier pieces with thickly applied glazes and incised decorations. These later pieces have a wonderful rustic quality. In 1973 Stalhane left Rorstrand to form his own studio, Designhuset.
